An independent shop, and mostly refrigeration

Sub-Zero and Wolf Appliance Services is an independent repair company working out of San Diego, and most of what it does is the cold half of a built-in kitchen: ice makers that have stopped, freezers that frost over, refrigerator columns that have lost one compartment, undercounter drawers and beverage centers, and Cove dishwashers. It is not part of the manufacturer’s own service program and does not claim to be. Organizing a week around refrigeration rather than around a zip code changes what rides on the van. Evaporator and condenser fan motors, defrost heaters and termination thermostats, thermistors, door gaskets, ice maker modules, fill valves and drain heaters are stock, because those are the parts that actually fail on this equipment. It also changes the questions on the phone. Which compartment is warm, whether the freezer is still hard-frozen, what the cubes look like coming out of the mold, where the ice is sitting behind the panel — every one of those answers narrows the parts list before anybody sets off.

The other variable is the year the kitchen was built, and in San Diego that spans forty years of Sub-Zero. An older built-in schedules its defrost with a heater, a termination thermostat and a timer, and every one of those is a part you can hold and test. A recent column lets a control board decide from compressor run time and door openings, and reports what it thinks through a service mode. Same complaint on the phone, two different diagnoses, two different parts lists. That is why the model and serial number is the first thing we ask for, and why a photograph of the plate saves more time than any description of the symptom.
