Sub-Zero

Sub-Zero Appliance Repair in San Diego

Every Sub-Zero built-in carries two separate refrigeration systems, one for the food compartment and one for the freezer, and no air passes between them. That single design decision shapes every diagnosis on this equipment: a freezer still holding hard ice has already cleared the expensive half of the machine, and the fault belongs to the refrigerator circuit alone. It is the first thing we ask about, before the model number and long before anything is quoted.

The order of the diagnosis matters more here than the tools do. The complaint gets verified with a probe first, because a compartment reading warm on the panel and cold on a calibrated probe is a sensor fault and nothing else. Then heat rejection: the condenser, the clearance behind the grille, the condenser fan and its current draw, which reads differently on a coastal unit in Coronado or Encinitas, where the fins corrode, than on an inland one in Escondido or Fallbrook, where they block with dust. Then air movement inside the cabinet: the evaporator fan, the defrost circuit, and the ice a defrost cycle leaves behind once it stops finishing. The sealed system comes last, because it is the expensive answer and the least common one, and it gets named only after the cheap ones have failed to explain the readings.

Reviews

Fridge side crept warm while the freezer stayed hard as a rock. He came out same day, pulled the lower grille and showed me the fins, gray and powdery after years of salt air a few blocks from the water in Point Loma. Cleaned up, fan checked, fine since.

I had started pricing new refrigerators. Ours is older than the remodel that went around it in this Mission Hills house, and the frost came back within a week every time I cleared it. He tested the heater and the thermostat rather than guessing. No frost since.

Two other outfits had been out to the Thermador freezer column and both wanted to replace the board. He moved the door and watched whether the light and fan responded, and the switch had quit, so the thing never scheduled a defrost. The fridge column beside it was fine all along.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you only work on Sub-Zero, or the rest of the kitchen as well?

The rest of it too, on the same visit where the schedule allows. Sub-Zero refrigeration is most of the week, Wolf ranges and ovens most of what is left, with Cove dishwashers, Thermador, Miele, Viking, Bosch, Asko and GE Monogram filling in the rest. Mention the second appliance when you book, because the ice maker nobody called about is usually the one starved longest.
